KaBOOM! approved Piru's new Playground!

I'm happy to announce that KaBOOM! has officially approved our application to build a brand new playground at the Town Square Depot!  If you've not heard of KaBOOM!, I highly encourage you to visit their website http://kaboom.org/ and learn more about what to expect over the next couple of months as we all work together to help the community and the children design and build their new playground!  The project was approved by the Board of Supervisors this morning, anticipating official notification this afternoon.
 
This project is so much more than just a contractor coming in and building a playground.  Similar to Habitat for Humanity, who brings community volunteers together to build homes for qualified individuals, KaBOOM! brings community members together to plan and build a playground for the kids in their community!  Volunteers, including local residents, will build the playground from scratch in one day with their own "sweat equity" on Saturday, August 7th!
 
So many agencies are involved in paying for and making this happen.  KaBOOM! guides the entire effort, AMGEN is the major sponsor who donated approximately $45,000 to pay for the majority of the equipment and will bring volunteers to help build it, the PNC will contribute up to $7500 as well as take care of site prep, volunteer food/water/etc., the County of Ventura is providing the land, site prep guidance, staffing and project oversight and CEDC-Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation is providing staff, volunteers, community recruitment, fund-raising and project oversight as well.  Now we need you and your help in recruiting volunteers for this worthy project!
 
Mark your calendars with these significant dates:
June 8, 4pm-8pm, Design Day - held at Warring Park Community Center - this is when the residents and children design their own park!
June 12, at Town Square Park, NeighborWorks Day - community wide special event for kids and families sponsored by CEDC
August 5, 730am-3pm, Prep Day at Town Square Park - 20 people will help receive deliveries, organize equipment/supplies for Build Day!
August 7, 8am-230pm, Build Day - ending with a ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening of the playground at 230pm!
 
We cannot emphasize enough, how important it is to recruit Piru residents, families, parents and kids to VOLUNTEER in this effort.  It CANNOT be done without their help! 
 
I'm personally asking each of you a huge favor in helping to recruit volunteers to help with this effort.  I've listed the number and type of volunteers needed for each date below as well as the various committees that are needed throughout the 9 week period.  See attached list. Don't be afraid to sign up for more than one committee!!! :O)   The volunteer needs are:
  • June 8 - 4pm to 8pm Design Day -20 parents, 20 kids, (20 staff which will be all of us) to help actually pick the equipment and design the playground!
  • June 12 - attend NeighborWorks Day event sponsored by CEDC and help recruit volunteers for Build Day
  • August 5 - Prep Day - need 20 strong adults to unload, move equipment, inventory and set the site up for Build Day
  • August 7 - BUILD DAY!  Need 150 adults and children to participate in Build Day - adults will build, children will work on creative art projects to enhance the park.
  • Between June 8-August 7, need parents and community members to volunteer to lead and participate in the following committees:
    • Planning Committee: Donna Plummer-County, Silvia Rodriguez-CEDC, KaBOOM project manager, Chris Cooper/Dan Hartzel County Public Works, Janet Bergamo-PNC, all Committee Chairs
    • Project Co-Chairs:  Donna Plummer, Silvia Rodriguez
    • Volunteer Recruitment and Registration Chairs:  (hopefully-Maria and/or JoAnn!), Silvia
    • Youth Involvement Team Chairs: (hopefully Juana?)
    • Construction Chairs:

    • Volunteer Food Team Chairs:

    • Logistics Team Chairs:  (ask Rosalind if a GSA maint person can be on staff at Prep and Build Days)
