Bank Of America Student Leaders

January Deadline for Bank of America Student Leaders®

December 21, 2010: Bank of America, a supporter of MENTOR and mentoring nationwide, is accepting applications for its Student Leader Program, which recognizes exemplary high school juniors and seniors for the volunteer work they do to improve their communities. The deadline for applications is January 12.

Bank of America established the program in 2004, aiming to cultivate and develop the next generation of community leaders. Since then, more than 1,400 students have been recognized.

Students chosen will receive a paid, eight-week internship during the summer of 2011 with selected nonprofit organizations so they will have opportunities to develop and apply leadership skills through hands-on work experience, while raising their awareness of community issues their host organization addresses.

They also will attend an all-expense-paid, week-long Student Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. The summit is conducted in partnership with the Close Up Foundation and will introduce students to various aspects of civic, nonprofit and business leadership.

"At a time when many teens are disproportionately affected by our nation's high unemployment rate as they prepare for higher education and their future careers, the Student Leaders program offers young leaders an opportunity to grow and develop while gaining valuable work experience," said Kerry Sullivan, president, Bank of America Charitable Foundation. "The program initiates a ripple effect that leads to higher levels of civic service, a greater understanding of how nonprofits work and additional positive impact in the communities we serve."

"We applaud Bank of America for their corporate leadership surrounding mentoring. They are a role model for companies across the United States in engaging young people and showing them about the myriad career opportunities available to them if they stay in school, study and develop positive and productive social skills and relationships. This is what mentoring is all about, and we encourage other corporations across the country to follow Bank of America's lead," said MENTOR's President and CEO Dr. Larry M. Wright.
