Summer Planning

One Step a la Vez fundraiser was a huge success!  Now we are busy planning our Summer Programming.  We are currently surveying our membership and engaging the youth in the larger community regarding their interest in the ideas below.  Programming will depend on sign up ahead of time.  Each program will need a certain number of kids signed up ahead of time for us to move forward.
  • Know Your Rights Week - What is legal?  What's not? Can you be searched without parental permission?
  • Automobile Week - Explore the world of automobiles. Visit auto museums; Tour the auto mechanic program at Ventura College
  • Water Week -Learn to swim; Beach Day; Hike the Santa Clara Dam area and learn about local water ecology and the importance of conservation
  • Jobs Week - Get help writing resumes, Visit local farms and learn about the realities of agricultural work; Visit colleges with job training programs
  • Hiking / Camping Week - Go on two different day hikes and one overnight trip.  Learn some hiking/camping and suvival basics.  Discover the rehabilitative power of nature.
  • College Week - Visit local colleges and universities and get a feel for the different programs and majors they offer. Examine admission requirements.
  • Computer Week - Learn some basic software (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)  Center will raffle off four computers
  • Animal Week - Visit local animal rescues, volunteer to walk animals that need adopting, learn about proper care of cats and dogs,
  • Health and Food Week - Stay healthy for summer! Excercise together! Learn how to read food labels, learn the importance of eating as whole fresh foods, cooking classes.
  • Algebra 1 Week - Brush up on Algebra 1 essentials.  Individual tutoring available.
  • Algebra 2 Week - Brush up on Algebra 2 essentials.  Individual tutoring available.
  • Geometry Week - Brush up on the essentials of Geometry.  Individual tutoring available.
CAMPS
Equestrian Camp (Girls only) - Attend an equestrian camp near Griffith Park for one week.  Learn to care for horses and some fundamentals of organic gardening
Community Leadership Institute - Attend a five day camp at the Dunn School in Los Olivos to learn about social justice work and how to improve your community

MUSEUM DAYS
This summer we will be taking periodic trips to visit some of Southern Californias many amazing museums to possibly include: LACMA, The Gettty, SB & LA Natural History  Museum, Black History Musem, The -Museum of Tolerance, Botanical Gardens, Griffith Observatory
